Whence the Weeping: the main-region progression

Quick answer: an early missing step is normal

PC Gamer describes Whence the Weeping as a long quest spanning several regions. If there is no actionable objective when you first arrive in Weeping Creek Valley, do not keep searching for a starting NPC or assume you missed it; clues and tracking steps appear as the story advances.

Progress in story order

• Advance through the Crimson Forest and investigate the renewed weeping; the report links the later marker to that region’s boss route.
• After reaching the Village of Lu, speak with Jewel about the sound. The clue points toward northeastern Meigu Lake.
• Progress through Pangzhen and defeat its western story-region boss to obtain the Phantom Edge route needed to reach Meigu Lake.
• At northeastern Meigu Lake, use the repaired Illusory Pipa to dispel the barrier. Enter the Mountain of Imprisonment, continue to its summit and defeat the regional boss to finish the quest.

If the quest seems stalled

When no step can be tracked, continue the main story and speak with relevant characters in the new region. The map guide covers basic map and Mind’s Eye controls.
