The key point

After clearing the Smuggler’s Tunnel, speak to Old Man Gen again in the Village of Lu and accept his request before entering the Pangzhen backstreets. The quest can fail if it remains on its opening objective; completing the branch leads to the War Wagon.

Quick answer and cutoff

Return to Old Man Gen in the Village of Lu and accept his search for his wife before entering the Pangzhen backstreets. AllThingsHow reports that entering the backstreet while the quest is still on its opening “clear the tunnel and return” objective fails the tale.

Steps

  • Rescue Old Man Gen from the puppets in the Village of Lu to start the tale.
  • After clearing the Smuggler’s Tunnel, return and accept his request to find his wife. Accept both parts of the conversation; the quest log should advance and award Old Man Gen’s Brass Key.
  • Enter the Pangzhen backstreets, unlock his old house and take the wooden comb from beside his wife.
  • Return the comb to Gen and continue the story. Published guides list the War Wagon Phantom Edge, a Memory Flower and a War Wagon tempering item among the eventual rewards.

Common mistake and verification

Do not assume the first “return to Gen” objective completes the quest. Check that the journal advanced before entering the backstreet. If Gen is missing, recheck story progress and the dialogue branch. This route and its rewards are summarized from public guides and the Epic Games Store guide; this site has not play-tested the branch.
